From William P. Hobby Airport (HOU)

Southwest's hub is closer to Galveston — about 45 miles, or 60 min drive time without traffic.

Uber/Lyft: $45-70. Shared shuttle: $35-45 per person.Best for: Southwest flyers, those wanting a shorter transfer

Hobby is significantly closer than IAH. If you have a choice of airports, Hobby saves 30+ minutes. The route via I-45 is straightforward — just watch for ferry traffic near Galveston.

Driving from Houston or Nearby

Galveston is about 50 miles south of downtown Houston via I-45. The drive is easy but traffic varies widely.

Gas for the drive, plus parking at the port or a hotel cruise package — the port quotes parking by sailing length rather than publishing a daily rate.Best for: Cruisers driving from Texas, Louisiana, or nearby states

Leave early on embarkation day — I-45 can back up significantly, especially on weekend cruise days. The last few miles through Galveston can also be slow with cruise traffic.

Port Parking Options

The port operates several lots at different terminals. Terminal 25/28 have the Express Lot (walking distance), Lots A & B (free shuttle), and SMP Garage. Terminal 10 has the North and South Lots.

The port quotes parking by sailing length through its reservation system rather than publishing a daily rate. Premium covered parking is available at some lots.Best for: Cruisers who want to park close to the terminal

Reserve at portofgalveston.com — the price appears only once you enter your sailing dates. Confirm your terminal before parking — Terminal 10 (Royal Caribbean) is a 5-minute drive from Terminals 25/28 (Carnival, Disney).

Many Galveston hotels offer packages that include parking and shuttle to the port. Stay the night before and leave your car while you cruise.

Quoted by the property at booking; the packages do not publish a price.Best for: Cruisers who want a stress-free experience, especially those arriving the day before

Local Tip

Hobby's single-terminal layout makes rideshare pickup simpler than IAH's — it's curbside on the arrivals level. Shuttle companies still run scheduled departures rather than on-demand pickups, so confirm your time and the last morning run when you book. Confirm your terminal before heading to the port, too — Terminal 10 is a 5-minute drive from the downtown terminals. Hobby handles far less international traffic than IAH, but if your flight is one of the exceptions, budget 60-90 minutes for immigration and customs first. If you are flying in from outside the US, sort your entry authorization before you book: most visa-waiver travelers need an approved ESTA, it is not issued at the airport, and without one the airline will not board you. Apply through the official CBP site at esta.cbp.dhs.gov — never a paid intermediary.
