The port's own parking pages describe every lot in detail and then decline to publish a rate, saying only that different rates are offered based on which lot you choose, covered or uncovered, and how close it sits to the terminals. The number appears when you put your dates into the reservation system. This is not an oversight. Cruise parking is now sold like airline seats: the price for a Saturday in March with four ships in port is not the price for a Tuesday in September with one, and a lot that is already three-quarters full will quote higher than one that is empty. Lighthouse Parking prices the same way, naming its Standard, Premium and Elite tiers and then asking for your ship and date before it shows a number. The independents are not uniform about this, though, and that is worth knowing before you assume the whole island is opaque. Open the port's reservation system, enter your ship and your sailing dates, and note the total for the lot you would actually use, including fees rather than the headline. Do the same at one independent lot. Then price a hotel package for the same dates. Compare the three totals. That comparison takes ten minutes and produces a real answer instead of an average. One warning about totals. Online reservations at this port carry add-ons beyond the nightly figure, and the headline number in a search result is not what you pay. Always read to the final total before comparing, because the ranking between options can and does change once fees are included.

Galveston's terminals are not interchangeable and neither is its parking, and the single most expensive mistake at this port is parking correctly for the wrong terminal. Terminals 25 and 28 sit together near 25th Street and Harborside Drive, and share four options. The Express Lot is the closest, around 680 uncovered spaces you walk from. The SMP Garage at 25th and Harborside is a six-level covered structure of roughly 400 spaces, also a walk, with the top level open to the sky. Economy Lots A and B, about 850 and 1,250 spaces, sit further out and run a free shuttle from covered stops that takes both you and your luggage to the terminal. Terminal 10 has its own cluster, and it is unusually walk-friendly. The North Premium Lot is a hundred spaces shaded by solar panels. The North Lot, around 550 spaces, and the South Lot, around 660, are both connected by covered walkways, with the South Lot also offering a free shuttle for anyone who would rather ride. The Pier 12 and Pier 10 lots are within walking distance too, and the port is explicit that no shuttle serves Pier 12. The port's parking FAQ answers the questions that ruin an embarkation morning, and they are worth knowing before you book rather than at the gate. Clearance in the garage is six feet, eight inches. Most spaces are a standard nine feet by nineteen feet. If you are driving anything with a roof box, a lifted suspension, or a van conversion, the garage is out and you want a surface lot. RVs are accommodated in the economy lots, but the port says that depending on the length of your vehicle you may have to purchase a minimum of two parking spaces. That is a fair policy and it is also a doubling of your parking cost, so price it before you assume the economy lot is the cheap option for a motorhome. Reservations are strongly suggested rather than strictly required. The port says that if you have not reserved and there is space in the lot when you arrive, it will take payment and let you park. That is a genuine safety net, but on a four-ship Saturday it is not a plan. Payment is credit card only. Cancellation is generous by the standards of this industry: you can cancel through the port's own website up to the day of sailing without a fee, provided you cancel at least 24 hours before your sail date, and after the sailing date there is no refund. Galveston Park N Cruise, at 2514 New Strand Street, is the one that behaves least like the rest of the island: it prints a starting-rate card by cruise length for both its gated outdoor lot and its indoor parking, runs a complimentary golf cart between the lot and the corner of 25th and New Strand, and takes no trailers, RVs or buses. Its cancellation window is the strictest of the three — more than 72 hours before check-in for a refund, minus a $25 fee per order, and nothing inside 72 hours. EZ Cruise Parking sits at 2727 Santa Fe Place, which its own site describes as two blocks from Piers 25 and 26 and within walking distance. It does not publish rates on its own site. When is off-site worth it? On this island the answer is less obvious than at ports where the official rate is fixed and high, because the port's own economy lots are already shuttle-served and priced dynamically. The independents compete mainly on three things: covered parking, cancellation and payment flexibility, and being outside the port's traffic pattern on a busy morning. If none of those matter to you, price the port's economy lot first — and then, because it is the only figure on the island you can see before you commit, hold Park N Cruise's published card up against whatever the port comes back with.

Everything about Galveston parking is downstream of one road. I-45 runs south from Houston and ends on the island, and there is no useful alternative. From downtown Houston it is about fifty miles; from George Bush Intercontinental it is around seventy-five, and from Hobby about forty-five. In clear conditions those are ninety, sixty and fifty minute drives respectively. On a Saturday with several ships sailing, add an hour to whichever one you are doing and you will not be disappointed. The last stretch is the part people underestimate. Once you are on the island, Harborside Drive is the artery serving every terminal and every parking lot, and it carries cruise traffic, port traffic and local traffic in the same lanes. Between about ten and one on an embarkation day it moves slowly. This is the argument for the walk-up lots rather than the shuttle lots when you are running late: an Express Lot space puts you at the terminal door under your own power, whereas a shuttle lot adds a wait you cannot control on top of a drive you already lost time on. Fly-in cruisers should treat embarkation-day arrival as the thing to avoid rather than the thing to optimise. Both Houston airports feed onto the same interstate, a delayed flight has no recovery path, and the ship does not wait.
